A Banquet of Books at the Traveler Restaurant

Travelers need two things: food and books. Everything else is optional.

Traveler Restaurant, on the border of Connecticut and Massachusetts on I-84 supplies you with both. It’s the only restaurant I know of that gives away three free books with every meal.

In honor of Banned Books Week, Lucinda and I want to share this wonderful roadside eatery with you.

As soon as you walk through the front door, you’re greeted by books.

The main dining room is lined with books. Wherever bookshelves aren’t you’ll find framed photos of famous authors, many of them signed.

Sure you could sit at a table and wait for your food. Or you could use that down time to browse the books shelves and narrow down your selection.

The food is classic diner fare, fresh battered seafood, burgers, and omelets all day. But lets be honest, you’re not here for the food. When you’re done eating, walk down to the basement, where you’ll find an entire used book store of reasonably priced volumes.

They’re organized by subject and they cover almost every topic (and surface) imaginable. Lucinda even found one she was interested in.

If you still need to stretch your legs, cross the parking lot to the little antique store. It’s both smaller and larger than it looks. Smaller, because the first level is closed off about halfway down the long building. Larger, because the basement is open for browsing.

Lucinda even managed to meet someone new. Though Lucinda didn’t seem as enthusiastic as usual about the idea of making friends. I’m not sure if it was the broken hand, the empty eye sockets, or the way her limbs creaked when she moved.
